January 14, 2010, Port-au-Prince – The closure of Port-au-Prince’s airport today threw up yet another obstacle for relief workers serving thousands of the estimated 3 million Haitians affected by Tuesday’s massive 7.0 earthquake. Leading agency World Vision warns that water, medical supplies and emergency shelter resources are critically low and that the closure will only delay life-saving supplies to the quake’s survivors.

Afternoon flight out of Denver will carry 18 metric tons of basic supplies to quake zone.

DENVER, January 14, 2010 – Today, Christian humanitarian agency, World Vision will rush 18 metric tons of life-saving supplies from its warehouse in Denver to the island nation of Haiti, which was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake Tuesday, which has affected some 3 million people.

These supplies and others already pre-positioned by the aid group will help meet the immediate survival needs of those affected by the quake until rebuilding efforts can begin.

URGENT: Help Provide Haiti Earthquake Relief

A strong 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck in an area about 14 miles from Haiti's capital city of Port-au-Prince at about 5 p.m. local time on Tuesday afternoon. The quake, which lasted about one minute, was followed by a series of aftershocks felt by World Vision staff members in the affected region.
